Case Study
From the Screen to the State: The Tamil Actor to Chief Minister Pipeline
This case study examines the long-standing relationship between cinema and politics in Tamil Nadu, with a focus on the repeated emergence of film stars as political leaders. It traces the historical development of this phenomenon from the Dravidian movement to the rise of M.G. Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa, and most recently Vijay. The article argues that cinematic fame in Tamil Nadu becomes politically significant only when combined with organizational networks and ideological alignment. Vijay’s 2026 electoral victory demonstrates both the endurance and evolution of celebrity politics in the state’s contemporary democratic landscape.
